Greetings from the College Cellars Cellar Team!
As we write this we are nearing the end of our harvest here at College Cellars. In the last week our students brought in Viognier from the 39 Floods Vineyard just outside of Milton Freewater, Barbera from Ciel Du Cheval on Red Mountain, Syrah and Grenache from the Joseph Christy Vineyard near Patterson, and Riesling from the Bacchus portion of the Sagemoor Vineyard out near Pasco. It’s a great indication of the breadth and diversity of vineyards, grapes, and wine styles our students are able to see as part of the program. Each student group has been working feverishly on their Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier white wine blends. Each team takes a slightly different approach to their wines, reflecting their diverse backgrounds and experiences. They have also been toiling away on their Red Wine projects, where each team has the opportunity to take charge of a red wine from the College Cellars portfolio of wines.
Though the crop has been lighter in the estate vineyards our students manage, they quality of the wines they are producing are tremendous. We are seeing great color, intensity, and fruit structure from all of the wines this year and the harvest weather has been a dream. With two more lots of grapes to bring in next week, the students and cellar team will shift their attention to getting wines racked to barrel and wrapping up their other classes before the end of the semester. It’s a great group and we can’t wait to see them forge a path in the industry in the years to come!
